About The Run

The Cradle Mountain Run is a one day traverse of Tasmania's famous Cradle Mt to Lake St Clair Overland track. The beauty of this run is that it traverses wild alpine areas of Tasmania's Cradle Mt Lake St Clair National Park and World Heritage Area. The altitude of the track in several areas of the plateau is greater than 1000 metres, which by world standards is not high, but here is well above the tree line.  This low tree line illustrates the exposure and harshness of conditions that can prevail even in summer.

This is an estimated, not-accurately measured 82km trail run limited to 60 runners. The event is a Run not a Race and mutual help is an important aspect. Hills are steep, the mud can suck your shoes off and roots and stones make the going slow for the less nimble footed.

Entry Criteria

Because of its difficulties, runners must provide evidence of their suitability to tackle this run.  The current entry criteria are as follows:-

1) Minimum age of 18 years on race day AND

2) You must have completed a previous Cradle Run within the last five years OR one of the following race types in the last three years:-

  • Any ultramarathon longer than 60 km finished within race cutoff time
  • Any Ironman distance Triathlon completed within the cutoff time allowed
  • Trailwalker in under 20 hours
  • XPD or similar Adventure Race
  • North Face 100 in under 20 hours
Please Note:- all results must be easily verifiable by the Cradle Run organisers (eg results on web). If information cannot be provided to easily verify results the organisers will reject the application.

Entry Process

The date for opening of entries will be advised on the "entry & news" page of this website. Entries are taken online and potential runners should note that entries fill extremely quickly. Payment will be possible via Paypal, credit card or cheque. The entry fee will be $100 / runner.

The following entry evaluation process takes place:-

1) Entries are received online after the opening date. Entries close on the last day of November.

2) If more than 60 entries are received, 10 runners are put on a waiting list.

3) The Organisers evaluate all entries (including waiting list) on a first come, first serve basis. If the runner's qualifications are accepted AND payment has been received, the entries are accepted in the order they were received. If payment has not been received within two weeks of entry, that entry will be disregarded. Please note that the organisers have the right to refuse any application without justification.

4) Accepted runners will be notified by email as soon as possible

5) If you withdraw due to injury, illness or lack of fitness you will not be penalised in future years. In fact we respect you for making that difficult decision. However, the organisers STRONGLY request that any accepted runners who wish to withdraw from the race contact the organisers as soon as possible. This will give another runner the chance to train and complete the event. From past experience 10 to 15 wait-listed runners will have the opportunity to run due to withdrawals

6) Full refunds will be given up to three weeks before the run. After that a $20 administration fee will be removed. No refund will be given if a runner withdraws less than three days before the race.

7) Late entries (after November) are considered up until the end of January. If you are accepted as a late entry and you subsequently withdraw, you will not receive a refund.
